Iceland Day 11

The last day of the trip. We awoke on our own schedules, showered and finished packing. While I was getting ready Kate and Dave had already grabbed themselves breakfast, so once Susan and Chris were up and showered we ventured out to grab a bite to eat. We ended up going to a Dunkin’ Donuts, of all places, since not many breakfast restaurants were open. We had a quick breakfast, then walked around Reykjavik a bit to get some fresh air.

Iceland Day 10

Today was the day that we completed the loop of Iceland. We got up and left the hotel just before 10 AM. We grabbed a quick breakfast at the Geirabakari Kaffihus on the edge of town. We only had one sight to see day, so after filling up the car with diesel we began the drive out of Borgarnes. The final sight was a set of waterfalls, and so we drove from Borgarnes to the site of both the Hraunfossar and Barnafoss waterfalls.

Iceland Day 9

I woke up just before 8 AM, had a quick shower, then started making breakfast for everyone. We had decided to cook at the AirBnB because the town of Arnarstapi didn’t really have any restaurants or grocery stores to get supplies at, so we had stocked up the night before. I made scrambled eggs and toast, while some of us also had little yogurt cups we’d picked up in Grundarfjörður. We ate, cleaned up, packed up the car, and were on the road a bit earlier than planned, 9:45 AM.

Iceland Day 8

We started our morning a bit later than usual, setting the alarm for 8:00 AM instead of the 7:00 AM that had become standard. We had a long day of driving ahead of us, with not many sites to see, so we decided to get a bit of extra rest. We were up and packed by around 9, then walked to a nearby grocery store to pick up breakfast and lunch.

Iceland Day 7

The day began with dry and slightly overcast conditions around 8:00 AM; we packed up the car then had a quick continental breakfast in the main guesthouse building. The first stop of the day was at the Dimmuborgir lava formations, the last of the sites we were going to see at Lake Mývatn. The lava formations were a short drive from the guesthouse, and once we arrived we started out on a walk around the area.

Iceland Day 6

We awoke to a clear and sunny day. We ended up sleeping in a bit because we had been up late taking photos the night before, so we didn’t leave Egilsstaðir until about 10:30 AM. After having a quick breakfast at the AirBnB, we packed up the car and got on the road. We filled up the car with diesel before leaving the town, since we had a long drive ahead of us.

Iceland Day 5

Wee awoke to weather that was overcast and slightly wet, however the wind was quite a bit less intense than it had been yesterday. We were originally scheduled to go kayaking in a glacial lake near the Vatnajökull national park at 9 AM, however we had received notice from the tour company the night before that the kayaking tour had to be cancelled due to high winds. This last-minute cancellation freed up our morning, and we took advantage of this free time to sleep in a bit.

Iceland Day 4

We awoke to the sound of howling winds and heavy rains. When we checked in at the guesthouse, we had been warned that the weather wasn’t going to be great, and the warnings were definitely correct. The cabin was built well, however the winds were strong enough to cause the walls of the cabin to move slightly. We quickly packed our things up, then very carefully opened the door of the cabin.

Iceland Day 3

We awoke shortly after 7 AM, got cleaned up, organized, and packed up the car. The AirBnB was pretty small, and wasn’t far from the highway, but there was very little noise during the evening so everyone slept well. The AirBnB actually looked like it used to be a gas station, which was a bit amusing, but it was cozy and enjoyable. We didn’t have any food with us, so the first order of business was to find something to eat and find some gas for the car.

Iceland Day 2

This was the day our Icelandic road trip really started. We ate a quick breakfast at the AirBnB, packed up the car and were on the road shortly after 9 AM. The weather was overcast and slightly drizzling, however the sun was poking through the clouds so we were optimistic that the day would clear up. We got onto the road and drove towards Þingvellir National Park. Þingvellir is a national historic site, located just north of Þingvallavatn.
